Where our beef comes from

PUPHE bully sticks are made from the beef pizzle of free-range, grass-fed cattle raised on small family farms in Bangladesh. Pizzle is a by-product of beef processing: the cattle are raised for food, and nothing is raised to make dog chews. Using it means more of each animal is put to use.

The checks behind every shipment

Before a bully stick reaches your dog, its shipment has passed four separate checks:

  • In Bangladesh: the country’s official veterinary authority issues a health certificate for each shipment, confirming where the pizzle came from and how it was processed.
  • At the Canadian border: each shipment is imported under a Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) permit for animal by-products.
  • In the lab: production batches are tested by an independent laboratory for Salmonella and E. coli.
  • At the plant: the manufacturing facility is registered with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Why we don’t post the documents

These documents carry our supplier’s details, permit numbers and shipment records, which are commercially confidential. So instead of posting copies, we list below exactly which documents we hold and what each one covers. If you have a question about any of them, contact us.

From farm to pouch

Five steps, one ingredient, no additives.

  1. Sourced

Beef pizzle from free-range, grass-fed cattle in Bangladesh, collected as a by-product of beef processing — nothing is raised for chews.

  2. Cleaned & cut

Each pizzle is cleaned, trimmed and graded by thickness into thin, standard, thick and jumbo; some are hand-braided.

  3. Slow-roasted

Roasted at low temperature to cook through and make the stick hard and long-lasting.

  4. Air-dried

Extended drying removes the moisture that causes the classic bully stick smell.

  5. Tested & packed

Batches are tested for Salmonella and E. coli before packing in resealable pouches.

The documents behind every shipment

We hold each of these for our current supply. They contain confidential supplier and shipment details, so we list what each one covers rather than posting copies. Questions? Contact us.

  • Veterinary health certificate

    Issued by
    Official veterinary authority of Bangladesh

Issued for each shipment by the exporting country’s veterinary authority. It confirms where the beef pizzle came from and how it was processed, as Canada’s import conditions require.

  • CFIA import permit and clearance

    Issued by
    Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA)

Canada requires a permit to import animal by-products such as beef pizzle. Every shipment enters Canada under that permit, together with the health certificate above.

  • Independent lab test: Salmonella and E. coli

    Issued by
    Independent third-party laboratory

Production batches are tested by an independent laboratory for Salmonella and E. coli before packing.

  • FDA food facility registration

    Issued by
U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)

The plant that makes our bully sticks is registered with the FDA, as required to sell pet treats in the United States.
