Who 12-inch bully sticks are for

A full 12-inch (30 cm) stick is made for medium and large dogs and for longer chew sessions. The extra length also gives you something to hold on to, and makes it easy to take the stick away between sessions.

A 12-inch stick has roughly twice the calories of a 6-inch stick of the same thickness, so many owners give half a stick at a time.

Which bully stick is right for your dog?

Pick by your dog's weight first, then by how hard they chew. When in doubt, size up — a stick that is too small can become a choking hazard.

Dog weight Typical breeds Recommended sticks
Under 10 kg (22 lb) Chihuahua, Yorkshire Terrier, Shih Tzu, puppies from 4 months

6-inch thin or standard sticks

10–25 kg (22–55 lb) Beagle, Cocker Spaniel, Border Collie, French Bulldog

6-inch thick or braided, or 12-inch standard

25–40 kg (55–88 lb) Labrador, Golden Retriever, Boxer, Husky

12-inch thick or braided; 6-inch jumbo for shorter sessions

Over 40 kg (88 lb) or power chewers German Shepherd, Rottweiler, Bernese Mountain Dog, Mastiff

12-inch jumbo or braided

Always supervise chewing and take the stick away once it is small enough to swallow.

Compare bully stick styles

All PUPHE sticks are the same single ingredient — the difference is thickness, and thickness decides how long a stick lasts.

Style 6-inch weight 12-inch weight Best for Chewer type Avg. chew time
Thin 10–18 g 20–37 g Puppies & toy breeds Gentle 10–20 min
Standard 19–24 g 38–49 g Small to medium dogs Light to moderate 20–40 min
Thick 25–29 g 50–59 g Medium to large dogs Moderate to strong 30–60 min
Jumbo 30 g+ 60 g+ Large & giant dogs Power chewers 45–90 min
Braided 30–50 g 60–100 g Medium to large dogs Strong 60–120 min

Chew times are averages from our in-house testing with medium-sized dogs; every dog is different.

Frequently asked questions

Should I buy 6-inch or 12-inch bully sticks?

Choose 6-inch sticks for small dogs, puppies and short sessions, and 12-inch sticks for medium and large dogs or longer chewing. A 12-inch stick is roughly twice the chew of a 6-inch stick of the same thickness, and twice the calories.

What is the best bully stick for a large dog?

For dogs over 25 kg, pick a 12-inch thick, jumbo or braided stick. Thickness matters more than length: a thicker stick is slower to chew and harder to swallow in large pieces.

How long does a bully stick last?

It depends on thickness and your dog. In our testing, a 6-inch thin stick lasts a small dog about 10–20 minutes, while a 12-inch braided stick can keep a large dog busy for 90 minutes or more across several sessions. See the comparison table on each product page.

How many bully sticks can my dog have per day?

Treats should make up no more than 10% of your dog's daily calories. Each product page lists the approximate calories per stick; for most dogs that means one stick a day, or part of a larger stick. Ask your vet if your dog is on a weight-loss plan.

How should I store bully sticks, and how long do they keep?

Keep them in the resealed pouch in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. Unopened, they keep for 24 months; once opened, use within about 3 months. A partly chewed stick can be rinsed, air-dried and stored for the next session.
